GRANGE

Set within a subdivided Category B listed villa in Edinburgh’s The Grange Conservation Area, this completed project marked our second intervention for the client, following the successful delivery of a rear dining room extension.

This phase became an exercise in approach, entrance, privacy, visibility and the careful separation of shared and private spaces, all while navigating the complexities of working with a listed building within a conservation area.

The design replaces an unsympathetic existing vestibule extension with a carefully considered contemporary addition that redefines arrival to the home and strengthens its relationship with the private courtyard. A new entrance vestibule and accessible shower room provide practical additional accommodation, while generous glazing and rooflights draw natural light deep into the plan and create a stronger visual connection to the external space.

The material palette of sandstone, larch cladding and carefully detailed, timber framed, glazing balances contemporary intervention with respect for the building’s historic fabric, establishing a calm, modern addition that sits comfortably alongside the original architecture.

The completed project delivers a warm, light-filled addition, demonstrating how thoughtful contemporary design can sensitively evolve a historic Edinburgh home.
