Glenwood
Glenwood is notable as being the first built commission of the architectural practice founded by William Kininmonth and Basil Spence, two of Scotland's foremost 20th century architects. Designed in 1931, it is a Category B listed building owned by only two families since its construction.
Our brief was to remodel and extend the north range of service accommodation to the rear of the house, overlooking the private rear garden, and create a dynamic, modern cooking/eating/living space that connected the house with the garden both visually and physically.
Our starting point for this project was to consider how Kininmonth and Spence might approach the alteration and enlargement of their first commission 90+ years after they designed it. Given the historical, social and technological changes over that period we think they would have enjoyed the challenge!
Extensive research, sensitive consideration of context and thoughtful development of ideas led to our solution, a pavilion set against the 1931 rear elevation, distinct yet clearly a family member.
